What is a successful business?

Everyone has pondered about starting a business at least once in their life. Being your own boss, possibly getting rich and living your dream life sounds like the answer to all our problems. However, it is no piece of cake, as it takes dedication and determination. A succesful business to me is one which gives you a long term financial profit, one which enables you to employ other people so you are not the only one benefiting from it, and one that grows exponentially and is not stuck progress-wise.

After browsing the web, I found other people's opinion's on what is a successful business and what is not:

A successful business, according to Goldman and Nalebuff, has to do with something you believe in, because this is what will get you through hard times. It is also full of compromise, except on the "big things": it should alway follow the "core values" you have chosen but it has to be flexible everywhere else.

In another site, David Ingram said that "maintaining a competitive edge is vital", as well as having your business well-planned to keep going in the right direction. Another good tip is to continuously revise your product or service so that the standards and quality are kept high.

The five top tips I could take away from the link successful business, sucessful life, are:

1. Understand finance: It is essential before jumping head-first into the world of business, because your knowledge has to match that of your competitors. It is also useful in order to solve problems that may arise or to outsmart the difficulties you encounter.

2. Show gratitude: I always remember the adage "what goes around comes back around", and no matter how rich or successful you get, one must always remember where he or she came from. It is also good to give back (do not be greedy!) and always acknowledge and appreciate what you have and how far you have gotten.

3. Stay healthy: I am a big advocate of health and fitness as natural supplements in our daily lives. Not only do we look better, but we feel better too. You would be surprised how much of a difference clean eating  makes (with occasional indulgences, of course) teamed with breaking out of our sedentary habits. Exercising 3 times a week does not take much effort and the results in both your body and mind will be worth it!

4. Keeping the right friends: Staying away from envious people or ones who only look to benefit from you success is crucial to keep you emotional health in line and maintain our already stressful lives drama-free. Negativity should be avoided! We want to surround ourselves with a close group of people who support us wholeheartedly, with no interests in mind.

5. The importance of family: In the words of one of my favourite singer-songwriters, Ed Sheeran, "success is nothing if you have no one to share it with", and family is often the first thing that comes to mind. They love us unconditionally and are always rooting in the stands. Lastly, leaving the legacy you are working so hard for is always related to family as well.

During the schoolweek, I have frankly not done much to improve my English. However, over the weekend I have seen the comedy The full monty and on Sunday my family and I had lunch with two long-time British friends, Don and Faith in Águilas, so I had the chance to practice my speaking skills and tell them all about university.
