Week 21: Telling The Truth

I am positive that absolutely everyone hates liars, even those who lie hate to be lied to.  In order to combat this common issue, you can do some research so as to catch the next lie someone tells you.
I looked at links on the characteristics of liars, and I am going to share the top ten ones that I found in my own words:

  1. Ask what is unexpected to see how the person reacts to it, even their microexpressions, which is a concealed emotion that lasts less than a second.
  2. Look for changes in behaviour: if a person that is normally anxious but now looks calm, or viceversa, chances are that they are lying.
  3. Pay attention to your intuition, which might be telling you something. Do not ignore your 'gut feeling'!
  4. Contradictions in utterances are great direct-tellers of lies.
  5. A sense of unease in the speaker, such as infrequent eye contact, sweating or anxiety
  6. Too much detail means that they have thought out what they were going to say, or even rehearsed it previously. 
  7. If they give unnecessary explanations, chances are, they are elaborating a lie. This ties into the explanation from the previous characteristic!
  8. If the subject is changed abruptly, then the liar might want to direct the attention away from the big fat lie he/she just told and move into a safe-zone!
  9. Speaking abnormally fast can also indicate nervousness and a squirmish attitude.
  10. Last but not least, if the person acts defensively without a solid reason, they are bound to be lying.

Moving on, I was recommended to watch the film Liar, liar, since it relates to this fascinating topic. However, as soon as I searched it on IMDb, I found that Jim Carrey plays the leading role, big trouble! I cannot possibly watch a Jim Carrey film because I have an irrational hate towards him! I cannot help it, I just cannot stand the poor man or any of the movies he does! Furthermore, the summary of the plot makes my decision even more clear! It sounds like a movie I might possibly see when I was eight or nine years old. Now, I would much rather spend my time watching a movie that I personally like or find interesting. In short, until further notice, I will be missing out on this film, sorry!

Last but not least, this week I have not done anything to improve my English, sadly, given that it was quite a stressful week and I barely had time to finish all of the things that I had to do. Nevertheless, at least I had the weekend to get a way to Águilas and its famous carnaval for a bit and detox from uni assignments.

Week 17: In my view

Trending topics are constantly discussed all over the news, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms. The average member of any social media is bombarded with a plethora of opinions on a daily basis. I usually keep quiet most of the time, choosing to be left out of the discussion. Nevertheless, today I would like to state my opinion on a trending topic I found on The Today Show's website. It states that a Trulia survey found that now, more married couples have roommates. This is due to the fact that they have to deal with increasing real estate pricing. Data-wise, the rate of married couples living with a roommate has doubled since 1995, both for homeowners and renters. It seems to me that reversing the rise in housing costs is a bit out of our reach. It is a matter of economy that most of us have to combat by adapting ourselves to reality. Week 18: Who We Are

Hey guys!  In today's post I'm going to focus on body idioms and inversions. Since I loved the body idioms that we've discovered in class this week so much, I scoured the web for 5 more expressions. to stand or stick out like a sore thumb : someone or something is being obvious, noticeable or easily recognized as different from the group. to do something in a heartbeat : to do something right away if you have the chance. to catch somebody's eye : to attract someone's attention or be attractive enough to be noticed. to the bone : as completely as possible. In Spanish it would be something like 'hasta los huesos'. have two left feet : to be awkward or clumsy with one's feet.
