Week 20: Rave Reviews

I love cinema, so reviews are something I am accustomed to reading to see if other viewers share my point of view or have reacted the same way to a specific film.
This time around, I searched the web for a review on The Favourite. Here is the link: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/dec/30/the-favourite-review-olivia-colman-emma-stone-rachel-weisz-yorgos-lanthimos (last accessed 1/03/2019)

Regarding the structure of this review, it has 8 paragraphs, although the 8th one can hardly be considered one, since it is just one long sentence, almost like a closing statement. Anyway, it does not seem to have a strict, extremely thought-out structure, but rather a more flowing one.

In regards to the language employed, it is very formal. Exquisite vocabulary is used, which enhances the review-style and the expressions used are far from colloquial (e.g. preposterously, bewigged, vociferous opposition, riddled, interloper, vantage, pathos, cantankerousness, angst...)

The information included goes from the rating of the main actresses' performances, details about their characters, the setting of the film and naming the director and other 'crew' members. The reviewer gives a brief summary of the main events enriched with plenty of adjectives that qualify each description. Moreover, he offers a relation between The Favourite and another movie of the same director and to Alice in Wonderland. The cinematography is also discussed in detail, as are the main themes and symbolic elements. Lastly, the eighth paragraph offers a brief conclusion discussing the soundtrack and relates it to how it affects the audience: keeping them on their toes, which finalizes the review as a positive one.

...
This week I went to a screening of Mary, Queen of Scots in original score. I absolutely loved it, I thought both actresses (Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan) were brilliant. Apart from the incredible cinematography and setting, I found the film useful for my studies as well, since the plot actually functioned as a historical aid. All in all, it has become one of my favourite movies of all time.
